China’s First Dual-Fuel LNG Carrier 30,000m3 Series

An LNG carrier is a tank ship designed for transporting liquefied natural gas at a maintained temperature of -163℃. An LNG carrier can be demanding in implementation of technology and its construction, while returns are relatively higher than other types of vessels, thus it  is sometimes referred to as “A Pearl in the Crown” in Shipbuilding Industries. Being environment-friendly and cost-effective, LNG has begun to gain interests from Ship Owners in Global Shipping Market. Global consumption of LNG has been increasing at an annual rate of 12% in the past years, which is a lot higher than other power resources. In China’s 12th Five-Year Plan, it is urged that green energies should be used to lower emission of CO2 and pollutants. Currently, China is using coal as primary power resource which has great impacts on environment. It would only be a matter of time for LNG and green energies alike to replace coal and petroleum.

Having foreseen this trend, Ningbo Xinle Shipbuilding Group Co., Ltd and Shanghai Odely Marine Engineering Co., Ltd collaborated on designing of China’s first dual-fuel LNG carrier 30,000m3 series. 30,000m3 has an overall length of 181m, moulded breadth is 28m, moulded depth is 19m and designed draft is 7.8m. It is equipped with a dual-fuel engine and has unrestricted navigation. 30,000m3 series is China’s first medium-sized/small-sized LNG carrier series that implements C-Tank technology and dual-fuel propulsion system. After delivery to China National petroleum Corp., 30,000m3 series will be primarily used as a transport between major LNG shore terminals and LNG satellite stations to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness for short-range LNG transportation. 30,000m3 series is designed in accordance with international LNG transport standards. It’ll be classed by Chinese Classification CCS, while French Classification Bureau Veritas helps to approve drawings and supervise its construction.
